AHHHH! You know how you sign up for something or decide to do something by a certain date and you think, “I have plenty of time, I don’t have to start that right now.”? Then all of the sudden you realize that the event is almost right upon you and nothing has been done to prepare for it? This is me right now! In mid September I will be joining in our community wide garage sale. You guys, I have not even started! This is what our garage currently looks like!
Every year, our little town has a community wide garage sale. These things are huge and most of the little communities do them around the area every year. One community even does them twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Thank goodness ours is only in September.
I have never had a garage sale as an adult. I can remember my mom having them when I was a kid but never have had the desire as a grown up. I’ll be honest, I pretty much felt like I was too good for garage sales. I felt like I didn’t need or want to buy other people’s junk. Boy was I wrong!
Now, I sheepishly admit, I love garage sales. After I had Logan and we moved to Ohio, I’ve found the majority of Logan’s clothes and even quite a few toys at them. Now, that he’s a little older, the clothes are a little harder to find because boys can be so rough on them. They just don’t last. However, if you have a little one, especially a girl, get out to garages sales! You will find great deals on nice clothes, I promise! Even if you don’t have kids, you will still find some interesting things!
Also, I have found some fun things at garage sales that I’ve spruced up and used. Like the pictures frames below. I took plain jane picture frames and spray painted them to match my bathroom. I needed pops of color and I didn’t have a lot of money to spend. This was the perfect solution.
Last year I found this great train table for Logan. We wanted to get him one for Christmas but with our budget, that would have been the only thing he received. I stumbled upon this one, at a garage sale, for only $7! The structure was still in fantastic shape, it just looked a little worn out, so I painted and spruced it up. It ended up being his big gift at Christmas last year. I did it all for less than $20!
Now, back to the problem at hand. I probably should have had a garage sale before we moved three years ago. However, it just didn’t work out that way. So we moved with a lot of stuff we didn’t need.
Now it is time to purge and get rid of some things. Eek, such a big job! As you can tell from the picture, most of our stuff is in boxes (This is a real life picture, no staging involved. Can you tell?), so I will have a lot of digging and rearranging. My goal is to get rid of as much as possible and then go back and organize all of our belongings. I’ll start with the mess in the basement and work my way through our bedrooms and bathroom.
Stick with me and follow along as I prepare for and have a garage sale. I’ll be sharing what I do to get ready and give tips on what did and didn’t work.
Have you ever had a garage sale? I’d love any tips or suggestions. Now, I’m off to start organizing our life!
